Choosing the right tour operator is just as important as choosing where you want to go. A safari or mountain climb is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you deserve a partner who listens, cares, and delivers on every promise. At Mawenzi Adventures, we live and work in Tanzania, and our company is built on people-first values, ethical choices, and a deep love for our country.
Here’s the eight ways in which we make your trip unforgettable and stress-free.
LOCAL COMPANY & TEAM
Mawenzi Adventures is not a big international brand that organizes trips from afar. We live right here in Tanzania, and our team is made up of local experts who know this country inside out. From the rhythms of daily life to the hidden corners of the country, our knowledge goes far beyond what’s written in the guidebooks. When you travel with us, you don’t just see Tanzania — you experience it with people who truly call it home.
PERSONALISED ITINERARIES
Every trip we organize is private and fully tailored to you. That means no set schedules, no joining large groups, and no “one-size-fits-all” tours. Some guests want to focus entirely on wildlife, others combine trekking with cultural encounters or time on the beach. Whatever your preferences, we’ll design your trip so it reflects your wishes. Our goal isn’t to sell you a package—it’s to create your dream trip.
You can ask us anything about your trip, and we love it when you share all your thoughts, to get a good idea about which destinations, activities, accommodations and travel style are the best fit for you.
We’re not a huge tour company, but we can offer just as many options in terms of activities, accommodation and more, with the personal service as the cherry on top of the cake.
Everything that’s part of our itineraries is prepared by us. We don’t use software for tour businesses that offer the same descriptions, pictures and standard itineraries to ever tour operator that uses them, but have created our own system from scratch. So everything we send you, is 100% us.
WE MAKE TIME FOR YOU
At Mawenzi Adventures, you’re never just a booking number. We, the owners, are your direct contact from the moment you send us your first request until you return home. Liesbeth personally handles your requests and questions, while Chim is your familiar face during your time in Tanzania (at least, if you’re traveling in northern Tanzania). For us, being available and approachable is not an extra—it’s the foundation of good service.
To offer this kind of personal contact, we deliberately choose to remain a small tour business. We accept a maximum amount of bookings, and don’t accept more if we’re not 100% sure we’ll be able to maintain the highest quality and level of service, or if we think it will have a negative impact on our own wellbeing or that of our team.

ONLY REALISTIC, HIGH QUALITY ITINERARIES
We believe your Tanzania trip should be both exciting and enjoyable. That’s why we don’t squeeze too much into one day or mislead you about distances or travel times—or about how tired you’ll probably be after a day of safari or climbing Kilimanjaro.
If it takes five hours to drive from one safari park to another, we’ll tell you honestly, and we’ll help you plan so that long drives don’t overshadow your experience. Our itineraries are designed to be not just achievable, but truly comfortable, so you can focus on enjoying Tanzania rather than rushing from one place to the next.
We check availability for every part of our itineraries – accommodations, transfers, flights… – before you pay and confirm everything as soon as we receive your deposit. That way, there are no bad surprises later on.
OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Of course we’ll take you to all the famous destinations like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar. But there’s so much more to discover.
With us, you can combine these iconic highlights with places that almost no other visitors ever see: remote lakes, small villages, or unique cultural encounters that don’t feel staged. We want you to experience both the legendary sights and the authentic, hidden corners of Tanzania that make your journey even more memorable.
A day on the east side of Lake Natron where, in all these years, we’ve never seen a single other tourist? A safari to a park like Mkomazi that’s only visited by 5 or 10 cars every day? A hike in a village on Kilimanjaro where even in plain high season you might be all alone? Living like the Maasai in one of Tanzania’s most remote areas? Or a day dedicated to women empowerment in a village that no tourist has ever heard of before? We’ve got you covered!

FACES & PLACES
The landscapes of Tanzania are breathtaking, but we believe that the people, stories, culture and connections are what really transforms a trip into a beautiful adventure. A warm conversation with your guide, a cooking class with local women, or a shared laugh during a coffee tour… For us, it will never just be about the best places to visit. We want to truly incorporate the ‘real’ Tanzania in our tours as well.
We don’t want to keep you inside a touristic bubble when you travel with us, and we also want to show you the things that are different from your home country. The food, the hygiene standards, the way of dealing with customers, the medical care, the quality of roads, the way of driving… They’re all very different, and we hope you’re ready to step outside of your comfort zone and discover it all.
WE’RE ALL ABOUT PEOPLE
None of our trips would be possible without the people who work for us tirelessly to make your travel dreams come true. So we think it’s only normal to treat them with the most respect possible.
We take pride in offering our guides, drivers, and support staff the best working conditions and fair treatment. Good salaries, legal benefits, comfortable accommodations and proper meals, respectful working hours… Ethical tourism isn’t just a label to us; it’s who we are. By traveling with us, you directly contribute to creating jobs and opportunities that respect people and promote growth in the local community.
And we want to take it even further, by also not organizing any kind of activities that involve voyeurism or poverty tourism. We don’t organize short visits to Maasai villages or visits to local schools and orphanages. We are actively against racism and white saviorism and we kindly ask you to eg. not donate items to strangers in the street. We’d be happy to help you donate items to responsible, community-based organizations if you wish.
And of course, let’s not forget the animals! We avoid zoos, so-called rescue centers that are not ethical at all, places like prison island or Nungwi aquarium because they harms the animals. We also ask our guides to behave in the most responsible way towards the animals you’ll see during your safari and other excursions, e.g. no off-road driving to get closer to animals, no trying to get a cheetah to climb on your car, no blocking the path of the animals for a better selfie, etc.

WE WORK BY THE BOOK
We are a Tanzanian tour operator, fully registered, licensed, and compliant with all Tanzanian regulations. While that might sound like a small detail, it’s crucial: it ensures your trip is legal and safe, and contributes to the country you’re exploring.
We pay all necessary taxes, secure the right permits, and operate responsibly. You might think that’s only normal, but unfortunately it’s less common than you might expect. When you travel with us, you can relax knowing that everything is done correctly and transparently.

OUR PROMISE
All of the choices above have been thoroughly considered, and are not just part of what we do, but of who we are. It’s about how we want to treat people, about how we define service, about delivering what we promise, about being honest and transparent, about respecting the country that we live and work in. Several of these choices result in higher costs for us and ultimately a slightly higher price for your trip, but we wouldn’t be comfortable operating in any other way.
We don’t believe in shortcuts, and we don’t believe in copy-paste safaris. Every choice we make is aimed at giving you an unforgettable, responsible, and comfortable journey through Tanzania. Whether it’s your first safari or your fifth, we want it to be the one you’ll always remember with a smile.
