TANZANIA SAFARI COMFORT LEVELS
From Budget to Premium — Understanding the 5 Safari Styles We Offer
When you start planning a safari, the first question is often “Where will I go?” — but the second is usually “What kind of experience do I want?”
At Mawenzi Adventures, we offer five distinct comfort levels — so whether you want to travel light and adventurous or sleep in a boutique lodge with views of the savannah, we’ve got you covered.
This guide breaks down what you can expect at each level: what the accommodations are like, how meals and service differ, and which option might be best for your travel style.

OUR 5 SAFARI COMFORT LEVELS EXPLAINED
Budget
Price Range: Lowest
Best for: Adventurous travelers on a tight budget
This is the most rustic safari style we offer. You’ll sleep on a thin mattress, in a small dome tent on a campsite, with basic shared toilets and bush showers.
A private chef travels with you and prepares simple but hearty meals, and our team takes care of the setup.
You’ll still enjoy private game drives — we never mix groups — but the accommodation and facilities are simple.
Great if you love:
Getting a sleeping-under-the-stars feeling
Immersive-back-to-nature experiences
Saving money for other parts of your trip
Not ideal if:
- You want a proper bed, en-suite bathroom or more comfort after long drives.
Migombani Camp (campsite) | Kudu Lodge (campsite)
Simba A campsite (public campsite)
Maasai Giraffe (campsite)

WHAT ABOUT LODGES, TENTED CAMPS, ...?
On this page, we focus on comfort levels, which tell you more about how much comfort / luxury you’ll get during your safari. This gives you an idea of how one lodge compares to another regarding price range.
Within each comfort level, you can also have different types of accommodations when it comes to their structure: canvas, brick, etc. Have a look at our Tanzania safari accommodation guide to understand more about words like lodge, tented camp and mobile camp.
And of course, the comfort level of your safari isn’t only determined by where you sleep – it’s about the entire experience. Meal style, safari vehicle comfort, flexibility and personalization, level of service… all play a role. Read our post about luxury vs budget safaris in Tanzania to discover which safari style is right for you.
WHY WE USE 5 COMFORT LEVELS - AND WHAT THIS REALLY MEANS
A night of camping in the Serengeti costs around $125 per person per night. Tented camps and lodges in the same location start at about $250, while the most luxurious options can go up to $1,000 or even $2,000+ per night.
That’s a huge price difference — and it’s exactly why we don’t believe in just three standard categories like “budget,” “mid-range,” and “luxury.” The gap between them would simply be too wide to give you an accurate idea of what to expect in terms of both comfort and cost.
Each comfort level covers a range, for example:
- One Standard lodge might be $250 per person per night
- Another Standard option could cost $350
- The first Comfort option might cost $375 or $400
The more expensive Standard option likely offers a bit more in terms of comfort or design, but not enough to move it into the next category. Grouping them under the same label makes it easier to compare options that are similar in feel — even if the price varies.
The real benefit? You’re not stuck with just one option. You can fine-tune your choices within each comfort level, based on your personal preferences, location, and exact budget. We always suggest one great option in your tailor-made quote — and offer two or three alternatives at a similar or slightly different price point so that you can choose. And don’t forget to check the more extensive lists of options above.
Keep in mind that prices vary not just by lodge, but also by region. A Comfort-level lodge in the Serengeti will likely cost more than a similar-quality one outside the national parks. This is why we don’t list exact price ranges per level — they simply depend too much on where you’re staying and when.
All of this offers you more flexibility and better value. Offering five comfort levels allows us to recommend options more accurately — so you get the best experience for your budget, without ending up in a place that doesn’t feel right for you.

CAN YOU MIX COMFORT LEVELS?
Yes, absolutely! You’re not locked into one comfort level for your entire safari. Want a more budget-friendly experience overall, but splurge on one luxurious lodge for a special occasion? Prefer to mix and match based on what’s available or what excites you most? That’s exactly what we’re here for.
Just let us know your preferences and we’ll tailor your safari to include the right mix — whether that’s different comfort levels each night or a special upgrade in the middle of your trip.
The only option we generally don’t recommend mixing is the Budget (camping) category with other comfort levels. Why? Because it requires bringing along all the camping and cooking equipment, plus a chef — and you’ll still need to pay for those even on the nights you stay in lodges or tented camps. In most cases, safaris don’t pass by the same point twice, so dropping gear or staff halfway isn’t practical (or cost-effective).
That said, if you’re keen on a hybrid experience, we’re always happy to talk through the possibilities and find creative solutions where possible!
