Tanzania Safari Accommodation Guide: Types of Lodges & Camps

TANZANIA SAFARI ACCOMMODATION
Guide: Lodges, Tented Camps & What to Expect

WHERE YOU'LL SLEEP ON SAFARI & HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT STYLE FOR YOU

Whether you’re dreaming of a luxury safari lodge with a pool or a simple tent under the stars, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Where will I sleep on safari?”

The answer: it depends!

At Mawenzi Adventures, we work with a wide range of accommodations to match your comfort level, travel style, and budget — from authentic bush camps to beautiful boutique lodges.

Here’s your complete guide to the different types of safari accommodation in Tanzania — what to expect, how they compare, and how to choose the one that’s right for you.

TANZANIA SAFARI ACCOMMODATION TYPES

Let’s break down the most common structures you might stay in during your safari. These are the physical types — how they’re built, not how comfortable or expensive they are.

Each of these can exist at different comfort levels: Budget (Camping) – Standard – Comfort – Luxury – Premium.

Safari Lodges

Structure: Permanent buildings (brick, stone, wood)

Comfort level: Typically comfort, luxury and premium.

Of all the options, safari lodges feel most like traditional hotels. They usually offer spacious rooms, en-suite bathrooms with ‘real’ showers – as opposed to bucket showers, electricity and hot water. The buildings are usually made to blend into the environment, although you won’t get the same connection with nature as when you’re sleeping in a tent. They’re a great option if you’re looking for comfort, stability, and a more classic stay.

Perfect for: First-time safari-goers, families – especially with small children, or anyone wanting solid walls and a hotel-like experience in the bush.

Tented Lodges

Structure: Permanent tents with wooden floors under solid roofs, built on platforms. They often offer canvas walls in the sleeping area but a more permanent construction in the bathrooms.

Comfort level: From standard to premium.

A tented lodge is a hybrid between a lodge and a tented camp, offering more structure and insulation while keeping that “close to nature” feel. Don’t let the word tent fool you — these can be beautifully designed with real beds, flush toilets, and hot showers. Some even rival five-star hotels in terms of service and decor.

You’ll still hear the sounds of the wild at night, but sleep in total comfort.

Perfect for: Travelers who want the safari atmosphere without sacrificing comfort.

Tented Camps

Structure: Permanent tents that usually have en-suite bathrooms. Tented camps offer less permanent structures than tented lodges. They usually don’t have a permanent roof, might have canvas walls in the bathrooms, or a groundsheet instead of a wooden floor.

Comfort level: Usually standard and comfort options.

While tented camps have a less luxurious feel than tented lodges, these are not like regular camping tents — even at Standard level, you’ll find real beds, en-suite bathrooms, and mosquito netting.

Perfect for: A classic safari experience — the sounds of the wild, stars above, and real comfort inside.

Mobile Camps

Structure: Semi-permanent or seasonal tents that move with the wildlife.

Comfort level: From standard to premium.

Mobile camps are often set up in remote areas to follow the Great Migration in the Serengeti. They’re fully serviced, with en-suite bathrooms and real beds — just with a lighter footprint and a more adventurous feel – they need to be moved entirely, twice a year.

Perfect for: Wildlife enthusiasts and migration-chasers looking for immersive bush experiences.

Campsites

Structure: Bring-your-own-tent – we’ll bring it for you – or basic camping setup.

Comfort level: Budget (camping) only.

These campsites offer shared bathrooms, minimal infrastructure, and lots of wildlife sounds at night. While we don’t often recommend them for our clients, they can be a great option for travelers that are not afraid of a very basic experience and that are looking for the most budget-friendly option.

Keep in mind that – because infrastructure is so basic – during a camping safari, you’ll travel with all the necessary gear – tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows, camping chairs and tables, cooking tools. You’ll also need to travel with a cook to prepare your meals.

Perfect for: Adventurous travelers on a tight budget — and yes, we can organize this too if you’re up for it!

We know the language can be tricky. You’ll often hear words like budget, mid-range, or high-end used online — but these vary widely.

At Mawenzi Adventures, we use a clear five-level scale for every safari we build:

  • Budget (Camping) – basic tents & campsites
  • Standard – simple but clean accommodations, mostly en-suite
  • Comfort – good food, en-suite bathrooms, and great locations (similar to what many call “mid-range”)
  • Luxury – high-end camps or lodges with stylish rooms, great service
  • Premium – top-tier properties with personalized service, special settings, and premium amenities

We also have a practical guide that tells you more about how the comfort level of a safari is not only about accommodation, and that will help you decide whether a budget or luxury Tanzania safari matches your travel style best.

ELECTRICITY, WATER & SAFETY - WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Most lodges and camps have solar power, though charging may be limited in remote camps. This means that you normally can’t use items such as hair dryers. Should you need electricity for medical reasons, please let us know during the booking process.

  • En-suite bathrooms are standard at all levels except Budget (Camping).

  • Camps are unfenced but very safe, with staff to escort you after dark and professional protocols in place.

  • Meals range from hearty bush dinners to gourmet multi-course menus, depending on your comfort level.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO SLEEP IN THE WILD?

No matter your comfort level, you’ll hear the sounds of nature — lions roaring, hyenas calling, elephants rustling near camp.

That’s what makes safari accommodation so unique: the perfect mix of comfort and raw nature.

However, you don’t need to worry about not being comfortable. Even in our Standard level camps, you’ll have a proper bed, your own bathroom, and a warm meal at the end of the day.

FAQ: QUICK ANSWERS ABOUT SAFARI ACCOMMODATION

Not at all! Tented camps are fully equipped with beds, private bathrooms, and staff. You don’t have to pitch anything or cook your own meals, you’ll eat in the dining area with comfortable tables and chairs and have a proper level of comfort.

Most do, but not always in the rooms/tents. And be ready for slower connections and limited signal deep in the parks.

Most yes, but some lodges and camps have age restrictions for safety. Let us know if you’re traveling with kids and we’ll match the right place.

Yes! Many tented camps and lodges are located inside the parks, offering incredible proximity to wildlife and early access to game drives.

This depends entirely on your travel style and that’s exactly why we find it important to offer a wide range of options. Tented camps and tented lodges offer a more immersive bush feel — you’ll hear the sounds of wildlife all around you. Lodges feel more like traditional hotels. Both can be luxurious. Both can be simple. The key is matching the level of comfort and experience you want.
