TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Elephants & Baobab Trees

Tarangire National Park is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but it’s an absolute gem that safari lovers shouldn’t miss. Located just a 2-hours drive from Arusha, this park is best known for its enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and unspoiled wilderness. If you’re seeking classic African landscapes, rich wildlife, and fewer crowds, Tarangire is a perfect addition to your Tanzania safari.

WHY CHOOSE TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK FOR YOUR SAFARI?

Despite being lesser-visited than some other parks on the northern circuit, Tarangire offers one of the most authentic wildlife experiences in Tanzania. Its name comes from the Tarangire River, a lifeline that attracts animals from miles around — especially during the dry season. Ngire actually means warthog in Swahili, so the full name means ‘river of warthogs’.

Highlights of Tarangire:

  • Huge elephant populations, particularly from June to October

  • Iconic baobab trees dotting the landscape

  • Excellent opportunities to spot lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more

  • A bird lover’s paradise with 500+ species

  • Less tourist traffic than Serengeti or Ngorongoro

  • Possible to add a walking safari if you stay at least 2 days

  • Ideal as a standalone safari or part of a longer northern circuit itinerary

A LANDSCAPE OF GIANTS

Tarangire’s landscape is striking and unique. Think rolling savannahs, seasonal marshes, and the unmistakable silhouettes of centuries-old baobabs rising against the sky. During the dry season (June to October), the Tarangire River becomes the only water source in the area, attracting an incredible concentration of wildlife.

You might witness scenes of elephants bathing, giraffes nibbling on acacia trees, and lions dozing in the shade.

WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS IN TARANGIRE

Though it’s not home to rhinos, Tarangire offers four of the Big Five — elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo — and the chance to see them up close without the crowds. It’s also a stronghold for rare species like the fringed-eared oryx and greater kudu, which are harder to spot in other parks.

You can expect to see:

  • Elephants in large family groups
  • Big cats: lions, leopards, and sometimes cheetahs
  • Zebras, wildebeest, impalas, elands, and more
  • Tree-climbing pythons (if you’re lucky!)
  • A spectacular variety of birds: yellow-collared lovebirds, lilac-breasted rollers, hornbills, and more

BEST TIME TO VISIT TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

The best time to visit Tarangire is during the dry season (June to October), when wildlife congregates around the river and visibility is excellent. However, if you’re interested in birdwatching, the wet season (November to May) brings migratory species and lush green landscapes.

Unlike some other parks, Tarangire is worth visiting year-round, especially if you enjoy a quieter, less commercial safari.
