NGORONGORO CRATER
UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most iconic natural wonders — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to an incredible concentration of wildlife within a collapsed ancient volcano. As part of the greater Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this unique destination offers a breathtaking mix of landscapes, wildlife and cultural encounters with the Maasai people. A visit to the Ngorongoro Crater is nothing short of unforgettable.

WHY CHOOSE NGORONGORO CRATER FOR YOUR SAFARI?

The Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the highest densities of wildlife in Africa within a relatively small, enclosed space. It’s often called “Africa’s Garden of Eden” thanks to its lush landscape and abundant game.

Highlights of Ngorongoro Crater:

  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa
  • Very high chance of Big Five sightings, including one of the few places in Tanzania to see black rhinos
  • Stunning views from the crater rim at 2,300+ meters altitude
  • Home to around 25,000 large animals year-round
  • Maasai communities live and herd their cattle in the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Ideal as part of a longer northern circuit itinerary including Serengeti and Tarangire

WHAT MAKES THE CRATER UNIQUE?

Formed about 2.5 million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact caldera. Measuring roughly 20 kilometers across and 600 meters deep, it acts as a natural enclosure for wildlife, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem with everything animals need to thrive.

The landscape is incredibly diverse, with open grasslands, acacia forests, swamps, and even a central salt lake (Lake Magadi) where flamingos can be spotted. It’s a true microcosm of East African wilderness.

WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS IN NGORONGORO CRATER

The crater floor teems with wildlife. It’s one of the only places in Tanzania where you might see all Big Five animals — elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino — in a single day. Because animals rarely leave the crater, game viewing is exceptional year-round.

You can expect to see:

  • Black rhinos, one of the park’s rarest residents

  • Large prides of lions, some used to safari vehicles

  • Hyenas, cheetahs, and elusive leopards

  • Elephants, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, and warthogs

  • Rich birdlife, especially around the lake and forested areas

DID YOU KNOW?

There are no giraffes inside Ngorongoro crater, because their long necks don’t allow them to walk down the steep descent into the crater. You might see them inside the conservation area, that the crater is a part of, but not inside the crater.

BEST TIME TO VISIT NGORONGORO CRATER

Ngorongoro is a year-round safari destination. Wildlife remains in the crater throughout the year due to its enclosed environment.

  • June to October (dry season): Best for clear skies, easy wildlife viewing, and pleasant temperatures.

  • November to May (wet season): The crater is greener and less dusty, with excellent birdwatching — though short afternoon rains are possible.

KEEP IN MIND

Morning mists and cooler temperatures are common due to the crater’s high elevation.

HOW TO INCLUDE NGORONGORO CRATER

IN YOUR ITINERARY

  • Entry to the crater is regulated and typically limited to half-day game drives to reduce congestion and preserve the ecosystem.

  • Ngorongoro is perfect to combine with other northern parks such as Tarangire, Serengeti and Lake Manyara.

  • We don’t organize day trips to Ngorongoro crater, because it’s simply too far from Arusha to fully enjoy it. We also find it very important to offer respectful working hours to our guides. This will also drastically increase your safety, by avoiding guides that have to work 14 or more hours per day.

  • When combined with the Serengeti and Tarangire and/or Lake Manyara, we’ll start with Tarangire / Lake Manyara and put Ngorongoro crater at the end of your safari. This way, the long distance to the Serengeti (around 8 hours driving from Arusha) is divided into shorter drives.

  • Many travelers stay outside the crater rim in lodges with panoramic views. Staying in Karatu, just outside of the Conservation Area is also an option and much more budget friendly than sleeping inside the Conservation Area.

  • We don’t offer the typical Maasai village visits inside the most visited parts of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to avoid human zoo situations and tourist traps. Please ask us about our other, much more respectful and ethical options, if you’re interested!
