Looking for a truly off-the-beaten-path safari experience in Tanzania? Then Mkomazi National Park might be just what you’re after. Located in the northeast of the country near the Kenyan border, this lesser-known park offers striking landscapes, rare wildlife like black rhinos and African wild dogs, and a peaceful atmosphere far from the tourist crowds. With sweeping savannahs framed by the Pare and Usambara mountains, Mkomazi is ideal for travelers who want to explore something different — and support crucial conservation work at the same time.
WHY VISIT MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK?
Located in northern Tanzania, not too far from Moshi and Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi National Park is one of the country’s best-kept secrets. This lesser-known park borders Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, forming a vital transboundary ecosystem for both wildlife and conservation efforts.
Although often overlooked in favor of more famous parks like the Serengeti or Tarangire, Mkomazi offers an authentic safari experience with stunning landscapes, fewer visitors, and the chance to see rare species you won’t encounter elsewhere.
Some absolute highlights are:
Home to Tanzania’s only rhino sanctuary – where you can spot the endangered black rhino
Large populations of giraffes, elands, hartebeests, zebras, and more
Occasional sightings of predators such as cheetahs, lions, and leopards
Elephants and wild dogs are slowly returning thanks to active conservation
Stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara and Pare Mountains
Over 450 bird species, including hornbills, ostriches, and secretary birds
Easily combined with cultural experiences around Same, Moshi, or Usambara

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK?
Game drives
Explore Mkomazi on a classic safari, often without another vehicle in sight. The open savannahs, acacia woodlands, and dry riverbeds make for stunning scenery and great wildlife photography.
Visit the rhino sanctuary
A guided visit to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary offers a rare chance to see black rhinos in a secure, natural environment — and to learn about Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to protect these critically endangered animals.
See African wild dogs
Another species that’s being protected in Mkomazi National Park are African wild dogs. The sanctuary is definitely also worth a visit to learn more about how these animals are threatened and which effort are being made for their protection.
Bird watching
With over 450 recorded species, Mkomazi is a paradise for birders. Look for bustards, bee-eaters, ostriches, eagles, and many migratory species during the wet season.
Combine with cultural experiences or hiking experiences
Thanks to its location, Mkomazi can easily be combined with Chagga and Pare cultural tours, Lake Jipe, or hikes in the South Pare or Usambara Mountains for a unique, off-the-beaten-track itinerary.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE RHINO SANCTUARY
Visiting the rhino sanctuary in Mkomazi is a unique experience — but it’s good to know it’s not a typical safari drive. Since the area is fenced to protect these endangered animals, the rangers usually have a pretty good idea of where they are. If another group just visited, they’ll likely know exactly where to go. So don’t expect a long search like on a regular game drive — instead, enjoy the rare chance to see black rhinos up close, and to learn more about the important conservation work happening here.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK
Mkomazi is open year-round, but some remote roads may be difficult to access in heavy rains (especially March–May). The rest of the year, Mkomazi National Park is a great stop on a northern Tanzania circuit for those looking to avoid the crowds.
- Dry season (June to October) is best for wildlife viewing, when animals gather near waterholes and roads are easy to navigate.
- Green season (November to May) brings lush landscapes and excellent bird watching — especially for migratory species.
