3-DAY SAFARI: LAKE NATRON OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Discover a part of Lake Natron that almost no other tourists ever visit. This safari will allow you to go totally off the beaten path, deep into Maasai land, where there’s not even a real road, and to probably have the place all to yourself.

Our main goals for this safari are allowing you to take a moment to disconnect from the rush of daily life and giving you the chance to have a real exchange with people whose lifestyle couldn’t be much further from yours. We therefore suggest a mix of activities such as a bird walk on the shore of the lake and a visit to a Maasai village on one hand, and different ‘free’ moments on the other. You can use these moments to relax at the camp or in the natural pool whilst enjoying the views and the quiet, or for sharing stories with your local Maasai guide, who will be more than happy to chat with you for hours. We don’t want to fill your program to the brim with fixed activities, as we feel like you’d miss out on what makes this package so amazing.

This is the only Maasai village in which we organize visits. We organize longer stays here but not shorter ones as we want to avoid human zoo situations at all times. Please click below to read more about our ethics regarding visits to not just Maasai villages but also schools and orphanages.

SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and transfer to Arusha

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), our driver will be waiting for you. He’ll drive you to your hotel in Arusha in about 1-1,5 hour. Once arrived, you can finally rest after your long flight and start taking it all in. If there’s enough time, you can spend some time in the center of Arusha, or simply relax at your hotel. If you arrive early, we can even arrange an activity for you during the day (to be booked in advance). We’re more than happy to help you with information about places to go, where to eat and other practical arrangements.

Meals: dinner.

Day 2: Arusha – Lake Natron

Your guide will pick you up early to drive to Lake Natron. You have a long road ahead of you, part of which will take you through the most breathtaking landscapes. You’ll first drive about 1,5 hours on a tarmac road and will then continue over dirt roads while you approach the sacred mountain of the Maasai, Ol Doinyo Lengai, which determines the landscapes around Lake Natron. The closer you get to the lake, the bumpier the road will get, and during the last hour before your arrival, you might even wonder if one can really still call it a road. You’ll reach your accommodation on the east side of the lake, with magnificent views, after about 7 hours of driving.

Once you’ve arrived, we invite you to stretch your legs, take in the views and relax at the natural pool that is located just a few steps away from the camp. You’ll also meet your local Maasai guide, who will accompany you during your activities tomorrow, invite you to his village and with whom you can already spend some time to get to know more about life around the lake, Maasai culture and all other aspects of local life that you’re interested in.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 3: East side of Lake Natron – bird walk and visit to a Maasai village

Today you’ll start the day with an early morning bird walk on the shore of the lake. We start around sunrise in order to avoid the heath, as it can get really hot at Lake Natron and there’s no trees or anything else that provides shade on this walk. You’ll walk from the camp to the shore and will spend a total of about 3 hours walking and bird watching.  Of course we’ll try to make sure you get to see the flamingos that the lake is so famous for, but also lots of other bird species that your guide will tell you more about.

We’ll provide a light breakfast before you leave (something simple like cake and tea or coffee) and when you get back from your hike, a full breakfast will await you. After breakfast you can take another dip in the natural pool and around noon, lunch will be served.

The afternoon will be dedicated to a visit to a Maasai village, during which you’ll be able to not just see but also experience a little bit of Maasai life. You’ll start the visit with a short walk to the rim of a nearby caldera, from where you can get beautiful views of the area and the village. After this, you’ll head to the village where we’ll plan activities like making fire, watching the cattle return after a day of walking around looking for grass, milking a goat and preparing the evening tea (prepared with the goat milk), check out how they get water, etc. These are all activities that are actually part of the daily life of the people in the village and we don’t focus on certain other activities such as the famous jumping, because while it might be more spectacular, it simply isn’t a day-to-day thing.

Your guide will give you some information about Maasai culture and we strongly encourage you to not just listen but also start a conversation. Ask all the questions you can imagine, don’t hesitate to tell him about your life and culture, sit down for a cup of tea and to share stories… We really hope this visit can turn into a beautiful human experience.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4: Lake Natron – Arusha

Today you can get up early again to see another sunrise or sleep a little bit longer if you prefer. You can even take a final dip in the natural pool if you want. Around 9 AM you’ll have breakfast at the camp and after this you’ll start the drive back towards Arusha. If the weather permits, we’ll take another road than the one we used to drive to the lake to make sure you get to see even more beautiful landscapes.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5: Transfer from Arusha to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and departure

Our driver will pick you up at your accommodation in Arusha and drive you to Kilimanjaro airport. We wish you a safe flight and hope you’ve had an unforgettable time!

Meals: breakfast.
