DAY HIKE IN MOUNT KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK
If you came to Tanzania without plans to climb all the way to the top of Kilimanjaro but still want to explore some of the lower areas, we have several options that would be just perfect for you. First there’s our Materuni or Marangu day trips, that offer a rather easy and short hike with a limited altitude gain, combined with an interesting cultural experience. Then there‘s our hikes of 1 to 4 days that focus a bit less on the cultural experience and much more on actually hiking. These are moderate to difficult and take you mostly through calm villages and rural areas on the foothills of Kilimanjaro.
And of course, last but not least, there’s our day hike inside Kilimanjaro National Park, during which you’ll climb from about 1860m to 2700m. It‘s a medium difficult hike, mostly through the forest part of the national park, and with beautiful views along the way. For this trip you will have to pay the entrance fees to the park, making it less suitable than the other options in case you’re on a budget. Keep reading to know all about it!
Your guide and driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Moshi around 8 am and drive you to Marangu gate (1860 m). This takes about 1 hour, after which you will fulfill the necessary registration.
You’ll hike through the rain forest, where lots of animals can be found and you’ll likely spot different types of monkeys like the black and white colobus and several bird species. The path is medium difficult and accessible for anyone in normal physical shape. You’ll reach your destination, the Mandara hut, after about 4 to 5 hours of hiking. This is the first camp on the Marangu route, and you’re likely to meet other climbers that are either going up or down.
After lunch there is a short excursion to Maundi crater, which is only a 15 minutes’ walk and offers some amazing views. The hike back to the starting point takes about 2 hours, after which we take you back to Moshi.
Duration: 10-12 hours
Driving time: +- 2 hours, return
Don’t forget: good hiking shoes, drinking bottle, rain poncho, sunscreen, sunglasses
