DAY HIKE ON MOUNT KILIMANJARO – 2 OPTIONS
If you came to Tanzania without plans to climb all the way to the top of Kilimanjaro but still want to explore some of the lower areas, we have several options that would be just perfect for you. First there’s our Materuni or Marangu day trips, that offer a rather easy and short hike with a limited altitude gain, combined with an interesting cultural experience. Then there‘s 2 other options, both of which you will find below.
The first one is a day hike inside Kilimanjaro National Park, during which you’ll climb from about 1860m to 2700m. It‘s a medium difficult hike, mostly through the forest part of the national park, and with beautiful views along the way. For this trip you will have to pay the entrance fees to the park, making it less suitable in case you’re on a budget.
The second one is a perfect combination of the others: a medium-difficult to hard day hike, right below the 1800m altitude level which indicates the start of Kilimanjaro National Park, at an affordable price. We keep its exact location to ourselves as we want to make sure you don’t have to share it with dozens of other tourists, but what we CAN tell you is that the views are spectacular and the hike is rewarding.
Join us as we take you on a – secret or not so secret – adventure to discover the lower parts of Mount Kilimanjaro!
Your guide and driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Moshi around 7-8 am and drive you to the starting point of your hike.
For the Kilimanjaro National Park hike, this takes about 1 hour, after which you will fulfill the necessary registration at Marangu Gate (1860m). You’ll hike through the rain forest, where lots of animals can be found and you’ll likely spot different types of monkeys like the black and white colobus and several bird species. The path is medium difficult and accessible for anyone in normal physical shape. You’ll reach your destination, the Mandara hut, after about 4 hours of hiking. This is the first camp on the Marangu route, and you’re likely to meet other climbers that are either going up or down. After lunch there is a short excursion to Maundi crater, which is only a 15 minutes’ walk and offers some amazing views. The hike back to the starting point takes about 2 hours, after which we take you back to Moshi.

For the hike outside the national park, the drive is only 30-45 minutes, and you’ll have the time to discuss your preferences and level of fitness with your guide in the car. We definitely recommend you do so, because this hike can easily be personalized as there are several different paths that can be followed in the area, from medium-difficult to hard. They all include an altitude gain of a few hundred meters, but this can be increased or decreased, over more or lesser accessible paths, etc. You’ll get the possibility to hike to a beautiful and quiet waterfall over a challenging, narrow and steep path, that offers amazing views to anyone in good shape, and you’ll walk through lush, green scenery and typical local villages with their welcoming inhabitants, no matter which path you follow. We can not give you much more information about this itinerary, as we want to adapt it to your preferences as much as possible, all whilst conserving the mystery about its exact location. But we’re convinced you will enjoy a wonderful hike, just challenging enough for your wishes!
