2-DAY HIKE ON THE FOOTHILLS OF KILIMANJARO – MATERUNI TO SHIMBWE
As you can see on our ‘day trips and short tours‘ page, we have several options for trips if you want to spend a day exploring the lower areas of Mount Kilimanjaro. But why stick to just one day when there’s so much beauty to see? Why not stay a bit longer and discover the area in 2 or even 4 days (4-day itinerary coming soon on our website)?
On this two-day hike you will discover the lush nature on the slopes of Kilimanjaro with its rain forest, waterfalls, authentic villages and welcoming people. You’ll start with the walk from Materuni village to Materuni waterfall like in our Materuni day trip package , but rather than to return to Materuni village afterwards, you continue hiking to Shimbwe village. You’ll overnight here and get to pick between two options for the second day of your hike, depending on your level of fitness and wishes.
Day 1: Materuni to Shimbwe
We’ll pick you up at your accommodation in Moshi around 9.30 am and drive to Materuni village. It takes around 45 minutes to get there in good weather conditions. After registration at the village office your trip can begin.
The first part of the trip is a relaxed 45-minute walk to Materuni waterfall. You’ll pas farmland and some village houses before reaching a small path that leads you along the river to the waterfall. With its 80 meters, Materuni waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Kilimanjaro area. Once you reach the waterfall you’ll have a snack and a rest, you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings and you can even jump into the cold water if you like.
After relaxing for about an hour, it’s time for a slightly more challenging part of the hike. You’ll cross the waterfall and the path starts going upwards. Just before you reach the village you’ll have a beautiful view of Materuni waterfall. From here it’s still about an hour before you reach Shimbwe Meadows Guesthouse, which will be your end point for today. You now walk past coffee shrubs, pass a small river and enjoy the view to the valley and the opposite hill while you walk along an irrigation channel. Lunchboxes will be provided sometime during this part of your hike.
Once you reach the guesthouse, your hosts will be waiting for you with a refreshing drink and some fresh fruits that you can enjoy from the balcony with views of Kilimanjaro, and you can check into your room before continuing with the rest of the program. You will learn how the Kilimanjaro coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and further processed and you’ll even be invited to help with the grinding of the coffee, which is traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances – a fun way to immerse yourself in the local culture!
The afternoon ends with a walk through Shimbwe village, but not after you’ve tasted your own cup of coffee! After the walk we’ll provide a traditional Chagga dinner and if you want, you’re also more than welcome to help with the preparation of this. Who knows, you might get some ideas to repeat once you go back home! A relaxing chat with your hosts and other guests will be the perfect way to end this wonderful day, and we advice you to not go to bed too late, in order to be fit for tomorrow.
Day 2: From Shimbwe to Mongioni waterfall or to the border of Kilimanjaro National Park
You’ll get up around 7.30 AM and we’ll start the day with a delicious breakfast and hopefully some morning views of Kilimanjaro. Around 9.30 it’s time to start hiking and today you’ll get to pick between 2 hikes:
Option 1: Hike to Mongioni waterfall
We start hiking over a rather easy path through Shimbwe village and pass by fields and banana plantations. A bit later the path gets more narrow and we head into the valley, walking through the forest. We follow a small creek and pass it several times before we descend all the way down to the waterfall over a steep section. Mongioni waterfall might be less high than Materuni waterfall, but it’s a beautiful place to relax. You can even bathe here, but only if you’re strong enough to deal with the quite strong current.
You’ll have lunch (lunchbox) at the waterfall and once you’re well rested the hike continues over a path that gets very steep at times. There’s more waterfalls along the way and amazing views of the valley. A visit to one of the other waterfalls is an option if you’re up for it!
You’ll get back to the guesthouse about 4 to 5 hours after the start of your hike and will be once again welcomed with a drink and fresh fruits. You can relax a little bit from your hike, and after this, your driver will take you back to Moshi.
Note: This option requires a good level of fitness and is only accessible in good weather conditions, as it becomes very slippery during or after the rain. We reserve the right to cancel this option if we judge that it has become impossible to undertake this hike in safe conditions.
Option 2: Hike to the border of Kilimanjaro National Park
For less fit or experienced hikers we recommend this option, as it will take you over well developed and accessible paths. It takes about 3,5 to 4,5 hours in total.
For this option you’ll also start your hike from the guesthouse which is located at an altitude of 1450 m. You’ll walk through the village, past houses, fields and beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. You’ll slowly climb up to an altitude of about 1900 meters, which indicates the start of Kilimanjaro National Park. You’ll relax and enjoy the views while a local cook prepares a typical fresh Chagga lunch for you.
After lunch you’ll walk back to the guesthouse where you will be once again welcomed with a drink and fresh fruits. You can relax a little bit from your hike, and after this, your driver will take you back to Moshi.
