10 DAYS SAFARI & LOCAL CULTURE

Pick this package if you’re hoping to not only enjoy a safari, but also discover a bit more of local Tanzanian culture!

The 4-day safari is perfect for anyone who’s hoping to see all of the big five – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and cape buffalo. You can find elephants in Lake Manyara or Tarangire National park, dozens of lions in the Serengeti and buffaloes more or less everywhere. Leopards and rhinoceros are a bit more difficult to find, with only a few dozen rhinos left in Ngorongoro crater, but we’ll do whatever we can to help make it happen. And of course there’s so many other species that are just as interesting, and of which you’ll be able to see plenty as well!

After your safari, you’ll get the chance to explore Moshi, the closest city to Kilimanjaro, and if you’re lucky you might get a glimpse of the highest mountain in Africa from there. You’ll even go for a hike on its lower parts. We’ll complete your itinerary with a refreshing plunge into the Kikuletwa hot springs and a guided visit of Moshi including a Tanzanian cooking class.

ITINERARY

Please pick your desired comfort level below to see the matching itinerary.

We use exactly the same cars and guides for each comfort level and excursions are identical as well. You’ll visit exactly the same places and there is no difference in comfort or quality during your game drives or visits. The choice you make below only impacts your accommodation.

For this option we suggest a glamping safari and budget accommodation options in Moshi and Arusha. Accommodations are simple but you’ll get a decent level of comfort without breaking the bank. Some options even have a swimming pool! You’ll sleep in permanent tents or rooms. These are usually not huge but they have real beds with proper bed linen. Meals are prepared in the restaurant of your accommodation and served at comfortable tables.

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and transfer to Moshi

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), our driver will be waiting for you. He’ll drive you to your hotel in Moshi in about 1 hour. Once arrived, you can finally rest after your long flight and start taking it all in. If there’s enough time, you can spend some time in the center of Moshi, or simply relax at your hotel. If you arrive early, we can even arrange an activity for you during the day (to be booked in advance). We’re more than happy to help you with information about places to go, where to eat and other practical arrangements.

AccommodationBristol Cottages, Moshi (standard room).

Meals: dinner included.

Day 2: Tanzanian cooking class & Moshi town tour

Today, you will experience daily life in Moshi and learn a little bit about the town’s history. We start with a walk through the city center, which – especially during the day – is very lively. The old railway, the cemetery, and simply the streets where people work and live. You’ll have lunch in a local restaurant and then you will go to the market to buy groceries, because tonight you are the chef! Once you have bought everything, you will go to your guide’s house to prepare a typical Tanzanian dinner.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 3: Villages of Kilimanjaro – Materuni & Shimbwe

Your guide will pick you up at your accommodation in Moshi around 9am and you drive to Materuni village, which takes around 45 minutes. After a fairly easy walk of 45 minutes (we advise you to wear good shoes because in case of rain it slips a little) you arrive at the waterfall. During your walk, your guide will explain more about Chagga culture, plants, etc. You can enjoy the view, and if you are not afraid of the cold, even swim. Then you continue the walk towards Shimbwe and the trail gets steeper in places. After about 2 hours you will arrive at the local guest house where you will enjoy a delicious fresh meal and the impressive views of Kilimanjaro (on a clear day). After or before the meal there is a coffee experience and after that we let you choose what you want to do. Stay a little longer in the guesthouse to rest and enjoy the view, take a short walk around the village of Shimbwe or go for another walk, e.g. to the start of Kilimanjaro National Park at about 1900 m altitude. You spend the night in the guesthouse and dinner will be served here.

Accommodation: Shimbwe Guesthouse, Shimbwe

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
MATERUNI WATERFALLS AND COFFEE TOUR DAY TRIP, TANZANIA

Day 4: Villages of Kilimanjaro – Materuni & Shimbwe

Today, we again let you choose what you want to do. There are several walks around Shimbwe, one more difficult than the other, so you can let your guide know which type of walk you prefer. There are walks that take you to other villages, one to the beginning of Kilimanjaro National Park at 1900 m altitude, one during which you go to another waterfall… in short, there will certainly be a hike that suits you! You will again have lunch at the accommodation and return to Moshi during the afternoon.

AccommodationBristol Cottages, Moshi (standard room).
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5: Kikuletwa hot springs

The hotsprings are a small oasis not far from the main road between Moshi and Arusha, and the perfect place to relax. And it’s not just the destination that matters, the drive to the hot springs is one that is well worth it too. We pick you up from your accommodation in Moshi in the morning and drive approximately 1,5 hours before reaching Kikuletwa Hot Springs. You’ll be leaving around 4 p.m., and it’s entirely up to you what to do in the meantime. Take a swim in the refreshing water (Surpriiiiise! The water is not as hot as you might expect, but very pleasant!), take a stroll around, watch the local boys and their jumps in spectacular water, or eat a local meal while you rest in the shade of palm and fig trees.

Day 6: Arusha – Lake Manyara or Tarangire National Park

We’ll pick you up at your accommodation in Arusha and drive about 2 to 3 hours to Lake Manyara or Tarangire National Park. We’ll pick the park depending on things like the time of the year in order to give you the best experience. As all our tours are private, you can of course also request the park of your choice, if you have any. You’ll have lunch in the park and spend the rest of the day game driving. Lake Manyara and Tarangire are both famous for their huge amounts of elephants, and in Lake Manyara you might even catch a glimpse of a tree-sitting lion! We’ll bring you to your accommodation before the evening sets in, either in the park or outside of it depending on the type you picked. Dinner will be served at the accommodation.
Accommodation: glamping at Migombani camp in Mto wa Mbu (standard tent)

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 7: Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the road. You have quite a bumpy ride ahead of you today, as you’ll have to drive through Ngorongoro conservation area before reaching the entrance of Serengeti National Park. You’ll have lunch and the rest of the afternoon is reserved for a stunning game drive through the central part of the Serengeti. You’ll witness an extraordinary nature, as well as an abundance of animals like lions, gnus, Thomson gazelles and zebras. In the evening we’ll bring you to your accommodation, where you’ll have dinner and an early sleep.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 8: Serengeti National Park

The morning is dedicated to another game drive in the central part of the Serengeti, and we can plan the day keeping in mind your wishes. Our top tip: get up early to witness the Serengeti at sunrise (from your accommodation or during a short game drive), have breakfast at your accommodation and spend the rest of the morning game driving. In the afternoon, you’ll start heading back towards Ngorongoro conservation area, with the chance to stop and see more wildlife along the way. We’ll provide dinner at your accommodation again.

AccommodationRhino Lodge inside Ngorongoro Conservation Area (standard room).

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

The days starts early again today. After breakfast you’ll head towards Ngorongoro crater for the last day of your trip. You’ll enter the crater over the steep path that leads down. Get ready to take in the amount of different animals you’re about to see – only giraffes and a few other species are absent, but other than that the wildlife density in this area is nothing less but impressive. You’re almost guaranteed to see large numbers of gnus (wildebeest), zebras, buffaloes and gazelles and chances are you’ll be able to spot rhinos and leopards. You’ll have lunch in the park and drive back to Arusha after that.
